Dirty Dancing: The Musical; Have the Time of Your Life… Again

Nobody puts Baby in a corner, and nobody should put a great dance number there, either.

Dirty Dancing: The Musical has arrived at The National Theatre with plenty of shimmy, shake, and soundtrack swagger. Based on the beloved 1987 film, the production delivers what fans came for: dazzling dancing, strong vocals, and an irresistibly fun atmosphere that practically begs the audience to kick off its shoes and join the conga line at Kellerman’s.

Set during the steamy summer of 1963, the story is deliciously familiar. Frances “Baby” Houseman (Annalese Starzec) arrives wide-eyed and leaves having discovered love, independence, and the transformative power of a really good dance lesson. Johnny Castle (Blake Zelesnikar) is still brooding and magnetic, the forbidden romance still crackles, and, yes, that lift is still that lift.

The dancing is the undeniable star. The choreography is energetic, sensual, and sharp, while the cast brings vocal muscle to the familiar soundtrack. When the music kicks in, the show practically dares you to sit still.

The only real stumble? For all the talk of a fresh stage approach, the production follows the movie remarkably closely. More like a live-action replay — with some uncannily similar-looking performers — than a reinvention. And a new emphasis on Martin Luther King Jr., civil liberties, and the social tensions of 1963 adds historical heft, but the material sometimes feels more tacked on than threaded into the story.

Still, once the dancing starts, it’s easy to surrender to the fun. Dirty Dancing: The Musical may not reinvent the summer at Kellerman’s, but it certainly knows how to throw a party… making sure it spins, sparkles, and lands that famous lift.

For fans of the film, that’s probably more than enough.
