‘Constellations’ a Galaxy of Possibilities at Constellation Theatre Co.

Sliding Doors meets Quantum Physics meets an Improv Class meets LOVE: Constellations is the newest staged play from Constellation Theatre Company.

It’s nearly impossible to define Constellations. In brief, the story follows star-crossed lovers as they travel through “a swirling multiverse of experiences.” There is no set timeline, no linear action, no defined ending. Instead, it interprets the galaxy of possibilities that could be.

There are scenes of levity, of despair, of frustration, and utter connectivity — and the pair of actors believably take the audience into each moment.

Marianne (Dina Soltan) and Roland (Tony Nam) deftly — and uncannily — transition between possible lives and possible storylines, all without ever leaving the stage, imagining the power of choice in a relationship.

With each decision, from meeting at a barbecue to staying over, moving in, moving on, reconnecting and more, the production explores the beautiful and often heart-wrenching connections between people.

Is it all about timing? Or is it destiny, adversity, or hope?

“This play is infused with forks in the road and second chances!” Director Nikki Mirza explained. “What does it take for these two people to be in the right place at the right time? Is there truly a ‘right’ place and time? I love the breadth of possibilities this play explores. But the reality is we don’t get to live out every possible outcome. However, I believe we are each walking the paths that we are destined to walk. I hope people leave this play reflecting on their lived experiences – feeling affirmed in choices they’ve made that have brought them where they are…and feeling curious if there is something in their past to revisit.”

Written by British playwright, Nick Payne, Constellations runs at Source Theatre, 1835 14th Street NW, Washington, DC, through March 9, 2025. Ticket prices range from $24-56. Run time is 90 minutes without intermission.
