Constellation Reconnects Humanity With World Premiere ‘Mysticism & Music’

Constellation Theatre Company concludes its 14th Season with a world premiere of Mysticism & Music

This one hour of contemporary New Age theater contains movement and prose, but music is skillfully at the center of it all as the troupe weaves scripture passages, sacred texts, and poetry from around the globe with bold ensemble staging and award-winning musicians and composers Tom Teasley and Chao Tian of Dong Xi perform a background soundtrack of over three dozen instruments live at every performance.

Actors begin by detailing 18 months of ‘things missed’ — some humorous, others decidedly not — and then, moving along like the five stages of grief, the cacophony of catastrophes turns into a chorus of shared humanity.

Among the themes on Mysticism & Music’s cross-cultural journey are crisis, isolation, inner darkness, sorrow, ritual, and celebration.  The Chinese dulcimer highlights these by offering sounds that are sometimes calming and soothing, or alternatively invigorating, or even sorrowful.

Constellation offers both in-person and streaming ticket options. In-person shows at Source Theatre will run from October 14 to November 7. A professionally filmed and edited version of the show (captured during the Live Stream Opening Night) will be available to stream as a Video On Demand through Constellation’s website from November 2-21.

*Mysticism & Music is 70 minutes with no intermission.
