Pitango Gelato Returns to 14th Street

DC’s 14th Street corridor is about to get a sweet upgrade. On February 27, beloved local gelateria Pitango Gelato officially opens its eighth location at 1802 14th Street, NW, marking a return to the neighborhood where the brand first planted its District roots nearly two decades ago.

The 1,027-square-foot gelateria and coffee shop, designed by EastWing Architects, will feature indoor seating for up to 10 guests and Pitango’s signature custom mahogany-and-marble bancone counter. Expect the full experience: freshly brewed coffee, Italian baked goods, and 20 rotating flavors of artisanal, hand-spun gelato and sorbet made in-house daily.

Pitango is known for its uncompromising approach to ingredients. Think: pistachios sourced from Sicily’s Mt. Etna region, single-origin chocolates, and milk from grass-fed cows on a family farm in Baltimore County. Sorbets are crafted from whole, fresh fruit, and everything is made from scratch without preservatives, artificial colors, or flavors. Even the coffee program is curated, with custom blends developed in collaboration with Hyattsville-based Vigilante Coffee.

To celebrate opening day, Pitango will host a festive grand opening starting at 5 pm on February 27. Les the DJ will spin Italo disco while guests enjoy scoops of gelato and complimentary shots of seasonal Hot Italian Sipping Chocolate made with single-origin Côte d’Ivoire chocolate, poured from the brand’s signature green gelato cart. The first 50 guests will score a Pitango-branded T-shirt and tote bag. And, in support of the region’s immigrant community, the shop will donate $1 from every gelato purchase to Ayuda.
