SUMMARY:Choral Arts Presents "In Search of Home"
DESCRIPTION:Choral Arts\, under the direction of conductor Marie Bucoy-Calavan\, will present “In Search of Home” on Sunday\, October 25\, 2026\, at 5:00 p.m. at the Church of the Epiphany (1317 G St NW\, Washington\, DC). \nFeaturing staged performance elements\, marking a first for a Choral Arts program\, alongside both historical and contemporary repertoire\, this opening season concert integrates multiple perspectives on refuge\, identity\, and human connection across five works. \n“Home is deeply personal—the place where we feel safe\, known\, and that we belong. This concert\, with music spread across centuries\, asks us to look beyond our own sense of home and consider our responsibility to those who are still searching for theirs. Not simply the place we come from\, but the place we create for one another\,” stated Marie Bucoy-Calavan\, Artistic Director of Choral Arts. “As the Ambassador Chorus\, we believe music can do more than be performed at the highest level; it can open a door. Being an ambassador begins with listening: to the stories of those without a home\, and to the questions we might otherwise hurry past. It means meeting what is unfamiliar with curiosity rather than fear\, and recognizing that a place to belong is something we make together. As we begin our 2026-2027 season\, Embrace the Unknown\, I cannot think of a more important place to start.” \nOriginally commissioned by Philadelphia’s The Crossing\, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s To The Hands\, is a response to Dieterich Buxtehude’s 1680 cantata of the same name\, which meditates on the suffering of the crucified Jesus. Shaw broadens the imagery of wounded hands to consider the present-day suffering of displaced persons and those seeking refuge throughout the world. Performed by the Chamber Ensemble in a staged version\, it opens with a prelude of chants based on the 17th-century composer’s music and features six distinct movements. Selections of Buxtehude’s third cantata\, Ad manus (“To the Hands”) will also be performed as part of the program. Through intimate vocal writing\, suspensions\, and expressive chromaticism\, Buxtehude invites the listener to not simply observe suffering\, but to contemplate it. \nA well-known advocate for world peace\, Leonard Bernstein crafted a musical plea for unity in divided times with his Chichester Psalms. Considered one of the mainstays of the twentieth-century choral-orchestra repertory\, the work is a three movement composition that blends tonal\, accessible melodies with biblical Hebrew text. \nRounding out the program is Johannes Brahms’ An die Heimat (“To the Homeland”) and Jeffrey Derus’ Whoever You Are. An die Heimat is a reflective quartet for mixed chorus and piano composed in 1863 in response to a poem by C.O. Sternau. First published in 1874 as the first of Brahms’ Three Quartets\, Op. 64\, the work captures a profound sense of longing\, nostalgia\, and emotional displacement. With a text by Jalal al-Din Rumi\, Derus’ Whoever You Are (2025) is an original a cappella work with layers of harmony expanding as the piece develops\, bringing in a feeling of warmth and belonging. \n  \nEvent Details \nChoral Arts — In Search of Home \nDate/Time: Sunday\, October 25\, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. \nPerformance Timing: approximately 90 minutes (no intermission) \n  \nLocation: Church of the Epiphany\, 1317 G St NW\, Washington\, DC \nTickets: $60 | Purchase here \nFeaturing: \nMarie Bucoy-Calavan\, Artistic Director \nMatthew Steynor\, organ \nIan Pathak\, countertenor \nChoral Arts Symphonic Chorus \nChoral Arts Chamber Ensemble \nChoral Arts Chamber Orchestra

SUMMARY:Artists in Residence: Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, October 7 the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) will present an award winning documentary film about women who chose art and independence over convention. The free screening is followed by a discussion with the film’s writer and director Katie Jacobs and composer Emily Wells. The talk will be moderated by Elise Peterson\, founder of Cool Moms\, a podcast and community platform focused on mothers who follow their passions in addition to parenthood. \nAbout the film\nPurchasing a house together on New York City’s Bowery neighborhood in the 1950s\, three women artists (painter Lois Dodd\, printmaker Eleanor Magid\, and sculptor Louise Kruger) defied societal norms and prioritized their art over traditional roles as wives and mothers. Through interviews with the women\, now in their 90s\, as well as their grown children\, Artists in Residence (2025\, 93 minutes) explores the emotional complexities of being an artist and a parent. The film is a heartfelt celebration of independence\, creativity\, and the enduring strength of women artists. \nArtists in Residence premiered at 2025 DOC NYC\, where it won the Metropolis Grand Jury Prize with impressive accolades: “The film uses honesty and vérité style to capture the emotional complexity of balancing creativity and identity. It invites reflection rather than easy answers\, revealing how friendship\, place\, and persistence shape a life’s work…Artists in Residence celebrates the courage to live authentically and the power of art to define a lifetime.” \nArtists in Residence was an official selection at the 2026 Green Mountain Film Festival\, the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival\, the Woods Hole Film Festival\, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival\, and the Sarasota Film Festival. It screens next during the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis\, October 2026. \nWhen\nWednesday\, October 7\, 2026\n6:30 to 8:30 p.m. \nWhere\nNational Museum of Women in the Arts\n1250 New York Avenue\, NW\, Washington\, D.C.\nTrailer: https://vimeo.com/1110352119?fl=pl&fe=cm \nAbout the Speakers\nKatie Jacobs is an award-winning director and Emmy-nominated producer best known for House M.D. \, which she executive produced and co-showran for all nine seasons. Under her leadership\, the series became one of the most-watched television shows in the world\, earning multiple Emmys\, Golden Globes\, a Peabody\, and an AFI Award; she also directed several acclaimed episodes. A graduate of NYU’s MFA Film program\, Katie began her career as an assistant before quickly becoming an exclusive producer for MGM and later producing films for Alan J. Pakula\, Lasse Hallström and Carl Reiner. Known for spotting talent\, she gave early TV roles to Hugh Laurie\, Olivia Wilde\, Viola Davis\, Lin-Manuel Miranda\, and Andre Braugher. Other awards include a Humanitas Prize and a Gracie Award for Outstanding Director. \nComposer\, producer\, and video artist Emily Wells builds songs from deliberate strata of vocals\, synths\, drums\, piano\, string\, and wind instruments. Forging a bridge between pop and chamber music\, her evocative music (described as “visionary” by NPR) and performances (called “quietly transfixing” by the New York Times) impel listeners to be attuned. Wells’s latest release\, the ten-song album Regards to the End\, explores the AIDS crisis\, climate change\, and her lived experience watching the world burn. In addition to Artists in Residence\, Wells also created the soundtrack and original score for Plainclothes (2025)\, a Sundance award-winning film\, and wrote the music for The Fires (2024)\, a play by Raja Feather Kelly that was commissioned and premiered by SOHO REP\, NYC. \nElise Peterson\, is a writer\, visual artist\, and cultural strategist\, as well as the founder of Cool Moms. Cool Moms began in 2018 as a podcast\, then expanded to include a live-conversation series\, and since has grown into a community and media platform focused on amplifying mothers who prioritize their passions.
