DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 22\, 2025\, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic will host its annual WishBall at the elegantly restored Waldorf Astoria\, Washington\, D.C.  This annual event\, which attracts more than 750 guests each year\, and raises awareness & funds for life-changing wishes for local children in the Washington\, D.C.\, Northern Virginia and Maryland region who are battling critical illnesses.  Last year\, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic raised more than $1.53 Million which allowed Make-A-Wish to grant 376 wishes in Maryland\, DC and Northern Virginia.  While this is amazing\, over 500 children in the Washington\, D.C. region receive a diagnosis that qualifies them for a wish. The funds raised through Wish Ball ensure more transformational wishes are granted for children with critical illnesses in the local community. \nFounded in 1983\, the Mid-Atlantic chapter has granted over 11\,500 since its inception. Wish kids face any number of critical illnesses such as cancer\, pediatric AIDS\, Spinal Muscular Atrophy\, Duchene’s muscular dystrophy\, kidney and heart disease. DESCRIPTION:On September 25\, the Prevent Cancer Foundation will hold its 30th Annual Gala to support cancer prevention and early detection programs. Over the last three decades\, funding from this Gala has led to breakthroughs in cancer research and innovative technologies\, including the development of new screening methods and early detection tools that have significantly improved patient outcomes. The Gala has also funded public education campaigns that have educated millions about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.  \nThe 2024 Gala event will pay tribute to the United Kingdom\, honoring The British Ambassador\, Her Excellency Dame Karen Pierce DCMG and Sir Charles Roxburgh KCB. With every Gala since 1994\, the Foundation has honored a country that shares its commitment to ending cancer—past honorees include South Korea\, Australia and\, most recently\, Jordan. This year’s event\, themed\, An Indispensable Friendship\, will feature an evening of lively music and inspiring personal stories while highlighting some of the United Kingdom’s special splendor.   \nContinuing with tradition\, the Foundation will present the annual Cancer Champion awards. Tillis\, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021\, has been open about his own cancer journey to raise awareness about the importance of prioritizing routine screenings. He successfully passed an amendment to expand veterans’ access to breast cancer screenings and is a supporter of multi-cancer early detection technology\, evidenced by his co-sponsorship of the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act.   \nAlongside Sen. Tillis\, Rep. Eshoo is a co-sponsor of the bipartisan Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act. She has also provided instrumental leadership on the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act\, Reconstructive Breast Surgery Benefits Act\, Breast Cancer and Cervical Treatment Act and Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act. There will also be a spotlight and preview of groundbreaking new educational experiences and programming that will tell the story of the nation’s founding and Trust for the National Mall’s exciting work with the National Park Service to prepare for the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. The Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service are working to prepare the iconic National Mall to play center stage for this historic commemoration.

DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare Theatre Company announced today the star-studded line-up and honorees to be celebrated at its annual Gala on April 15\, 2024. Titled All the World’s a Stage: Celebrating the US/UK Relationship\, the gala will take place at The Anthem on the Washington\, DC Wharf. \nInternationally acclaimed Olivier Award-winning actor Indira Varma will be honored with the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Acting (aka “Will Award”)\, presented to her by Tony Award-winning actor Ralph Fiennes\, her co-star in STC’s production of Macbeth\, which will be playing in Washington April 9 through May 5. Celebrated Tony Award-winning actor John Lithgow will be present to receive the STC Lifetime Achievement Award. \nSTC will also present the theatre’s inaugural Sea Change Award to a policymaker for their political and philanthropic work aimed at protecting and developing the arts sector. \nPresenters and performers throughout the night include Broadway’s Jordan Donica\, fresh from his Tony-nominated performance as Lancelot in Camelot. The BBC’s Katty Kay will serve as the evening’s emcee.
