Make your plans to join us at 6:30 PM on May 8 to celebrate 2024 honorees and support the Trust’s work with the National Park Service to preserve and elevate the National Mall!

BALL for THE MALL features the History, Heroes & Hope Awards, honoring individuals and institutions that embody the ideals of the National Mall. This year’s theme is “A Celebration of Storytelling on the National Mall.” It honors three unique storytellers who share a dedication to deepening the collective understanding, sharing stories yet untold, and connecting history, stories and perspectives across generations.

Dave Grohl 
Nineteen-time Grammy Award-winning musician and songwriter, founder and lead singer of Foo Fighters, best-selling author of The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, and D.C. area native and favorite son.
The Mellon Foundation
Accepted by President Elizabeth Alexander
This leading arts and humanities foundation will be recognized for their vision and support for the acclaimed Beyond Granite initiative and art exhibition led by the Trust for the National Mall in 2023.
George C. Wolfe
Renowned filmmaker and five-time Tony Award-winner who brought “RUSTIN” film to life, along with Netflix and Higher Ground Productions, sharing the story behind the March on Washington, which defined the National Mall as America’s Civic Stage.
During BALL for THE MALL, attendees will reflect on the Beyond Granite exhibition, supported by the Mellon Foundation, which earned critical acclaim in 2023 for bringing new stories to the National Mall. There will also be a spotlight and preview of groundbreaking new educational experiences and programming that will tell the story of the nation’s founding and Trust for the National Mall’s exciting work with the National Park Service to prepare for the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. The Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service are working to prepare the iconic National Mall to play center stage for this historic commemoration.
