2026-2027 Theatre: STC’s New Season Is Serving
Looking for something cultural but still fun? Consider this your cue. The Shakespeare Theatre Company just dropped its 26/27 season, and there’s no dusty drama, just main character monologues, musical moments, and a little magic thrown in for good measure.
Artistic Director Simon Godwin is calling it a lineup of “miracles, music, and magic,” which, in DC terms, means big feelings, bigger performances, and at least one show you’ll pretend you read in college.
Let’s break it down.
First up: wigs, war, and a moral meltdown.
The season kicks off with The Score, starring Brian Cox (yes, that commanding presence from Succession). He plays composer Johann Sebastian Bach, squaring off against a power-hungry king in a battle of art vs. authority. It’s dramatic, it’s intellectual, it’s giving, “I will discuss this over wine afterward.” (SEP 11–OCT 18)
Then: paint, pain, and pure performance.
Frida…A Self-Portrait brings Frida Kahlo to life in a one-woman show. Expect movement, storytelling, and at least one moment where you consider journaling again. (OCT 8–NOV 8)
Cue the chaos (and the fairies).
A Midsummer Night’s Dream floats in just in time for winter whimsy, with puppetry wizardry from Basil Twist. Lovers get lost, identities get messy, and someone turns into a donkey. Honestly, it’s Shakespeare at his most unhinged (and most fun). (DEC 4, 2026–JAN 10)
Then comes the gut punch.
A Raisin in the Sun arrives in partnership with Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and it’s not pulling any punches. Lorraine Hansberry’s iconic story of the Younger family — balancing dreams, dignity, and hard decisions — gets a fresh staging with newly restored material. Same emotional impact, even sharper edges. (JAN 23–FEB 28)
Star-crossed, but make it stylish.
Spring brings Romeo and Juliet back to the stage for the first time in over a decade. Expect romance, rebellion, and at least one audience member whispering, “This won’t end well,” like it’s breaking news. (APR 13–MAY 16)
And finally: sequins, sorrow, and Sondheim.
The season wraps with Follies, a lush, slightly haunted musical co-produced with Signature Theatre. Think showgirls, nostalgia, and a full orchestra delivering feelings you didn’t plan to have. It’s glamorous. It’s bittersweet. It’s a moment. (MAY 18–JUN 20)
The overall vibe? High art with high drama… but packaged in a way that actually feels fun. This season is stacked and subscriptions are already live, which is your gentle nudge to get organized and grab your seats!
