With Winter on the Way, DC Skates on New Ice — Twice!

Larger even than NYC’s Rockefeller Center rink, Washington DC’s largest outdoor ice skating rink is set to open at the Washington Harbour (Georgetown waterfront) today (11/19).   But just because it’s DC’s biggest doesn’t mean it’s DC’s … first.

Preempting Georgetown’s new skatescapades by just one week, a smaller, yet just as groundbreaking new ice rink, Canal Park, was unveiled in Southwest last Friday.

Here’s the fast frozen on DC’s twice as nice NEW ice:

The Canal Park rink is located on one end of newly dedicated green space at Nationals Park. A simple 250-foot-long figure eight beckons by the beacon of a giant white “light cube” (live skating feed!) and costs just $8 (w/ $3 skate rental) per skatealong.

Washington Harbour’s rink, on the other hand, sits atop the waterfront’s giant fountain (in warmer weather).  The 11,800 square-foot oval sets you back $9 (w/ $5 skate rental), proving that sometimes bigger is … more expensive.  But then again, they have TURKEY BOWLING.  That’s right, the birds on November 21 don’t get a Thanksgiving pardon — they get frozen to slide on over and knock out some pins!
