SheROCKS is back for its fifth year to celebrate, honor and highlight women who are rocking the arts, business and tech industries! SheROCKS – Washington, D.C.’s premiere Women’s History Month event – will take place Friday and Saturday, March 24th – 25th, 2017. SheROCKS is one of the fastest growing events for emerging women artists and entrepreneurs, created to showcase the nation’s abundant female talent,  while creating ways to accelerate support amongst women in business.

This two-day fempreneur extravaganza will boast its signature luxury pamper party, SheROCKS Power Brunch and Mixer featuring Anastasia Wright  of IMG Agency and Krystal Williams of Doable You, and the SheROCKS main event which will be held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Washington D.C. Convention Center. A new addition to the SheROCKS itinerary is Herstory- a Ted Talks style event – also to be held at the Embassy Suites. SheROCKS Pamper Party and Power Brunch and Mixer will be held at an undisclosed location.

This year’s SheROCKS honorees include SheROCKS Woman of the Year, Dr. Neeta Bhushan ofEmotional Grit and NeetaBhushan.com, SheROCKS Filmmaker of the Year, Antoinette Brock,  
SheROCKS Industry Power Player, Anie Akpe, founder of NetWorq App, SheROCKS Art Innovators of the Year, Sandie Luna & Debora Balardini of Punto SpaceSheROCKS Photographer of the Year, Ashleigh Bing and SheROCKS Woman in Fashion, Lyne Butterworth. 
SheROCKS Herstory Recipient, Amy Oestreicher, is a human phenomenon better known as the one woman show; she sings, acts, dances, does TEDx, composes and more all after waking from a six-month coma and surviving being unable to eat or drink for 6 YEARS.

Showcased performers will continue to be a SheROCKS highlight. Event organizers scoured the nation for the best emerging acts, narrowing it down to 14 performers. Last year’s participants, We Are Good Girl,were seen on America’s Got Talent and recently signed to Warner Brother’s Music post SheROCKS 2016. Ann Hamilton, an internationally renowned visual artist and self-described maker, joins Emily Pilloton, designer, builder, educator, author and founder of the nonprofit design agency Project H Design. The two will talk about the poetic and practical aspects of hands-on learning and how the experience of making things can inspire the next generation of innovators and creative change makers. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Ann Hamilton

Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally recognized for her large-scale multimedia installations. Using time as process and material, her methods of making serve as an invocation of place, of collective voice, of communities past and of labor present. Hamilton has received numerous awards and honors, exhibited around the world, and represented the U.S. at the 1991 São Paulo Biennial and the 1999 Venice Biennale. She is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Art at Ohio State University.

 

Emily Pilloton / @ProjectHDesign

Emily Pilloton is a designer, builder, educator, author and founder of the nonprofit design agency Project H Design. Using architecture and design as vehicles for social justice and public education, Pilloton is particularly invested in using design as a creative tool for young girls and students of color to build change in their own lives through projects such as Studio H and Girls Garage. She is currently a visiting associate professor of design at the University of California, Davis, and is the author of two books, Design Revolution: 100 Products that Empower People, and Tell Them I Built This: Transforming Schools, Communities, and Lives With Design-Based Education.

Annual Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival @ Maryland State Fairgrounds

Maryland’s largest hoedown returns to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium on March 31 and April 1.  The Annual Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival is produced by local Trigger Agency as a benefit to the Spirit of Hope Children’s Foundation.

This year marks the 11th annual production which started very humbly in Timonium, MD and has grown to a National Tour reaching hundreds of thousands of guests from New York to Florida.

The all-you-care-to-taste extravaganza starts with a Friday Night Whole Hog Session from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.This session will offer a dinner plate of BBQ with all the fixings as well as unlimited sampling of bourbon and beer. Saturday sessions run from noon to 6 p.m.  An exclusive VIP only tasting will be held Noon until 2 p.m. and then General Admission will follow from 2 p.m.  through 6 p.m.

A souvenir glass is included with every ticket purchase and offers guests unlimited tastings of 60 of the best craft beers and 75-80 top-notch bourbons. In addition, delicious samples of barbeque from the South’s best Pit Masters will be available throughout the day. The event will offer live music, arts, crafts, memorabilia exhibits and a cigar tent outside for the enthusiast.  Full schedules and menus are posted on the website.

“This show has spawned many knock-offs all over the country – but if the truth be known – we started here at the Timonium Fairgrounds ten years ago in one of the smaller buildings.  To see where we’ve grown and to share it with all the fans is quite an honor,” explains the festival founder, Greg Nivens, a Baltimore resident. Guests can expect some fun and exciting features this year:

 

  • The Shrine of Swine is back – but the whole hogs are always intriguing and new.  Each hog is totally different and even tastes different.
  • New Gaming Area – this includes Air Hockey Table Games, Foose Ball, Pinball Machines and Skeet Ball
  • Great Live Music is back with some new faces.
  • Fun crowd competitions will be featured on the Main Stage including the Stein Holding Competition, The Drink like a Lady Contest, Baltimore’s Best Beer Belly, and Two Rounds of Bacon Eating.

General admission to the festival is $39 in advance / $45 on –site and includes admission to event and a souvenir glass. VIP Saturday admission is $59.   The special Friday Night session is $49 per person. Designated Driver admission is also available for $29 and includes admission to the event. Chance for Life 2017 @ MGM National Harbor

Chance for Life is Washington area’s premiere Poker Tournament, Wine & Chef’s Tasting, and After Party. It is a raucous, dynamic experience that is unlike any other in the Washington area. Withe the mission to fight against pediatric cancer so that no children or family will ever have to experience having a child affected by cancer, 100% of all proceeds raised through Chance for Life are donated to directly fund cancer research through Children’s National Hospital Center and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Kennedy Snyder, 16, was diagnosed with an aggressive spinal cord tumor at two years old. After a successful fight to eradicate the tumor, it returned almost to its original size in less than three months. Kennedy’s indomitable spirit – bravery, exuberance, and persistence – is the inspiration that created Chance for Life.

Chance for Life, taking place on April 1, is going to be the FIRST charity event held at MGM National Harbor. MGM approached CFL after attending as a sponsor last year and it was selected as the logical venue to allow CFL To grow to a $1M+ night event.

100% of all proceeds raised through CFL are donated to directly fund cancer research through Children’s National Hospital Center and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Since being founded 12 years ago, Chance for Life has raised over two million dollars for pediatric cancer research (they grossed $410,000 in 2016 alone)!

The Friends of the National Arboretum Garden Fair and Plant Sale will be taking place on April 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on April 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the U.S. National Arboretum.

The 27th annual Garden Fair and Plant Sale, hosted by Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA), has moved to a new central location in the U.S. National Arboretum, which is celebrating its 90th year.

This year’s event, April 28-29, has been relocated and will now be outside the Administration Building and Visitor Center, adjacent to the National Capitol Columns, Azalea Collection and the Grove of State Trees. Attendees will see more of the Arboretum grounds as they shop for traditional and rare plants from nurseries around the world, including new offerings like Gentiana acaulis hybrids, Beesia deltophylla, Phygelius cultivars and eight different types of Cypripedium orchids.

The Garden Fair and Plant Sale is a weekend designed for gardeners of all levels in the D.C. area searching for their perfect plant, herbs from the Potomac Unit of the National Herb Society or horticulture guidance from expert horticulturists. The 2017 Garden Fair and Plant Sale will also feature food and drink vendors, a performance by the Washington Revels, and a strawberry potting activity for children.
