It was the largest Ukefest to date… but a “sleeper attack by the Swedes” kept last weekend’s annual Strathmore Ukulele Festival from capturing a Guinness World Record.
With over 21,000 in attendance and some 945 signed up to participate, the arts center was out to grab the Guinness World Record for largest Ukulele Ensemble, set by 851 people in London in 2009. Yet our local hopefuls found out they fell short to a surprise Swedish showing of 1547 players, who gathered to upend the uke record on August 20th in Helsingbord.
Strathmore contends it can still claim the largest U.S. ensemble.
