Maybe the most anticipated ‘smoke’ since that white puff escaped the Vatican earlier this year.
Top Chef’s Mike Isabella‘s third restaurant, the new Kapnos — which translates to smoke in Greek — officially opened July 5th, but held a VIP and media showcase Monday night, just hours in advance of Isabella opening his other new offering: G, both on upper 14th Street.
“We’ll be spit-roasting whole animals every day,” boasted Isabella, as he sent around plates of lamb wraps and lamb flatbread (clearly, he likes his lamb!). “It’s a taste of Northern Greece, and a different way of enjoying a cuisine that a lot of people think they already know.”
The space is an unusual ode to Macedonia, accented by warm earth tones and Byzantine details in lieu of the traditional sky blue and white. The dining room wraps around a massive open kitchen — with rotisserie grills at its center — while a long bar dominates adjacent. Wine glasses (and bottles!) suspended from on high make whimsical custom lights… and remind you to enjoy a beverage with your roast beast and baklava.
And now, just next door, Isabella can also serve sandwiches by day and a four-course Italian American tasting menu by night. G, a companion to Italian-inspired Graffiato located in Chinatown, opened Tuesday. “With G, I’m recreating the food I loved to eat growing up in Jersey,” said Isabella. “At lunch, you will find classic Italian American deli subs, as well as some more elevated sandwiches and flavors inspired by our menu at Kapnos.”
