“The World’s a Stage” for Politicos: Will on the Hill

 by Casey Valerie Linsey

Members of Congress, Senators, and Washington’s dynamos nixed their power suits in favor of Shakespearean garb on Monday evening for the 9th annual “Will on the Hill.”
Politicians and corporate executives took to the Sidney Harman Hall stage in the production of “The World’s a Stage” joined by professional actors Tim Daly of Private Practice and Broadway veteran Euan Morton. Written by Peter Byrne and directed by Alan Paul, the play — as is often the case with the annual Will on the Hill performance — was filled with political jokes and left the audience in hysterics. After all, as former Congresswoman Jane Harman explained, the event gave politicians the chance to “be as goofy as possible.”

While the amateur Shakespearean thespians may not be ready to display their acting skills at the Globe Theater in London, they were able to help raise $360,000 to benefit the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s education, outreach, and community programs. Noted event co-chair Nick Allard, “Shakespeare was magic for me in high school” and being able to “fund community drama programs and watch students perform are personal highlights.”
