The New H Street Matchbox: A Revival with Relish

It might be hard to imagine downing your prosciutto pizza pie (w/ black pepper, honey, arugula, and Black Mission figs!!) where DCers of old used to play, but remember that reincarnations are H Street’s speciality — perhaps now second to its cream of crab soup.

Now savoring its new 14th Street location, a mansion-sized Matchbox occupies the area that was once a bowling alley… a jazz club… and most recently, a rehearsal hall for Arena Stage.  But how does the food measure up to Matchbox’s grandiose new space?  Well, it matches.

“Go-to” favorites — like 3.6.9 mini burgers and spicy meatball pizza — that guests have grown to love, tempt alongside slow cooked braised beef short ribs, glazed honey miso salmon, and seared sea scallops with pork belly risotto.

It may no longer be an automobile showroom, a billiards lounge, or feature the soft sounds of Etta James, but this Matchbox rallies in its reinvention… and its flavorful range.

Expert tip: Ask for a reservation inside “The Matchbox,” a seating area overlooking the whole restaurant, bar and kitchen!

*DC’s newest Matchbox is located at 1901 T Street NW (corner of 14th & T)
