That’s Hot: When Fashion and Politics Mix

by Monica Gray
Hood & Fisher
“When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good,” said Portia Hood on Thursday evening at the anniversary party of Fashion Delegate, a Washington political style site, which Hood co-founded one year ago with lobbyist Jennifer Fisher.
Last spring, while juggling jobs and graduate school, Hood and Fisher sought a way to stay connected. Launching a political fashion blog proved the perfect avenue for the friends to keep in touch, tap into their passion for fashion and take advantage of their unique location in the nation’s capital. In just one year, Fashion Delegate has evolved into a local style source: profiling designers, covering local fashion events and highlighting the best-dressed in politics.  “With a fashionista like Michelle Obama in office, it is the perfect time to have a political fashion blog,” said Fisher.

Held downtown, the anniversary event featured nationally renowned fashion label ESPION by Deidre Jefferies. Prints by local artist Lisa Jones lined the walls of the private penthouse venue, with sale proceeds benefiting Becky’s Fund, a non-profit that works to prevent domestic violence.

The event drew a fun, eclectic group of models, movie makers, business execs, and athletes, including Redskins RB Clinton Portis (who hosted Fashion Delegate’s launch event one year ago at his home). When asked if he took fashion advice from Fisher, his long-time friend, Portis chuckled, “She tries to give me fashion advice, but it’s hard for me to take advice from anybody.”
