SXSW Best Doc ‘Beware of Mr. Baker’ Plays at West End

Surprise!  Legendary rock and roller Ginger Baker is still alive.  That’s something even Director (and Washington native) Jay Bulger admitted he was shocked to hear when he set out to do a documentary on the drummer.

As it turns out, despite drug-induced self-destruction, Baker (73) lives in South Africa with his young bride and 39 polo ponies.

“He’s an eccentric recluse,” says Bulger in an interview with FilmMaker Magazine, “Ginger Baker has been an olive farmer, a rally car racer, a poloist and played himself, a villain, on an 80′s cop TV show… People needed to meet the man, hear him play the drums, and experience this legendary character for themselves.”

And they can.  Bulger’s 92 minute unrated documentary, “Beware of Mr. Baker“, which won a Grand Jury prize for Best Documentary at SXSW 2012, and includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Carlos Santana opens at the West End cinema on January 25th.

Beware that Baker is a tortured, misunderstood man with a smashing story — and who smashed the filmmaker’s nose on the last day of filming!
