St. Jude Gourmet Gala

Tonight was the St. Jude Gourmet Gala, a Mardi Gras themed evening of fantastic food for a cause that’s also too good to pass up.

I was covering the event for DC Magazine, so look for my event coverage in a future issue, but just some preliminary thoughts… and a short video here to give you the goods.

Restaurants from all over the city (notably excepting Acadiana, as Michelle Mobley pointed out) showcased some of their signature dishes in hopes of winning the audience’s choice award, which, surprisingly, went to the Ronald Reagan Center. My choice might have been for either of the shrimp and grits dishes of the evening – or the Scotch Egg from Common Wealth, which wins K Street Kate points for creativity.
Of course all of this was to benefit St. Jude’s Research Hospital, a children’s hospital named for the patron saint of lost causes, which aims to help all children regardless of their inability to pay. We heard from one survivor, Will Glowaski, who not only beat cancer and went on to graduate from the 6th grade with straight A’s, but won the Heroes award for being a true hero through the ordeal.
