Spring Awakening

A buzz of electricity filled the air as Dupont Circle’s Keegan Theater kicked off its production of the cutting-edge Broadway musical, Spring Awakening.

Set in late-19th-century Germany, Spring Awakening explores the lust and confusion experienced by a group of adolescents living in a small pious community, and their journey to discover individual sexuality while being kept in the dark by parents, teachers, and clergy.

Keegan’s intimate venue, simple set design, and beautiful cast infuse unique life into the love between Wendla (Ali Hoxie) and Melchior (Vincent Kempski), along with their friend Moritz (Paul Scanlan), as each struggle to understand the shattering realizations and transformations that stir in the soul around the age of 13.

Directed by Mark and Susan Marie Rhea, this production of Spring Awakening, a musical adaptation of the controversial 1892 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind, will be shown at the Keegan Theater June 2 though July 8, 2012.
