Phillips Collection Gets Permanently Pollinated

An artist visiting the Phillips Collection has been a busy bee.

German artist Wolfgang Laib, noted for spreading and piling pollens that he’s collected over 30 years near his rural home in Germany, had plans to install some on special commission over a large space at the MOMA in New York over the Winter.photo (15)

But if he was going to bee so close to DC, why not make a meditative permanent chamber of wax on the wall right here?!

So Laib (rhymes with vibe) commandeered an old maintenance closet at the Phillips Collection, applied some 900 pounds of wax directly to the wall, and lit it by a single lightbulb to create an ethereal effect.

The Collection hasn’t had a new permanent installation since 1960 — so this waxy wonder which opened earlier in March has seen a good bit of buzz.

Check it out for yourself and wax artistic.  Tickets $10-12
