DC’s young party crowd might want to get their blood sugar checked after Saturday’s first annual Donut Fest, hosted by Brightest Young Things.
The sold-out event brought together self-proclaimed foodies and pastry lovers to enjoy an afternoon of sugar, piled on top of sugar, and then drizzled with beer. The madness happened at Penn Social, a spectacularly large venue that boasts three bars, a dancefloor and stage, and tons of classic arcade games like Skeeball and Pop-a-shot.
Attendees were able to taste defiantly decadent samples from local shops and restaurants: District Donut pleased the crowds with a classic — the PB&J donut, while Poste decided to get a little experimental with their duck fat donuts with bourbon maple glaze. Delicious donuts were also provided by Jackie’s, Zeke’s DC Donutz, Eventide, and even newcomer Astro Donuts & Fried Chicken, which is set to open in two weeks.
Participants also got to witness a donut tasting and incredibly messy donut-eating contest. And, anyone worried about the building amount of calories ingested was covered as well — with a dance party. Body Jam stepped in to DJ after a popular set by King Street Bluegrass.
Year two may be contingent on whether DC’s donut trend continues…but we suggest you start dieting in anticipation.
