Last week, national educational and advocacy organization DC Vote welcomed Washingtonians to its second annual 3 Star Ball at the NAR Building Rooftop. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Councilmembers Brianne Nadeau and Kenyan McDuffie were among the notable attendees that were on hand to take a stand for equal representation for District residents — meaning statehood, or at least equal voting representation in Congress.

The night honored DC United and the team’s Head Coach Ben Olsen for their dedication to fulfilling the promise of democracy. DC United goal keeper Bill Hamid and Edward “Smitty” Smith joined DC Vote Executive Board members Vinoda Basnayake and Dannia Hakki to host the democratic fete, which also featured DC Vote Executive Director Kimberly Perry : “It was so very energizing to have such a great turnout of young and enthusiastic people ready to work for equality for DC.”

After accepting the Democracy All Star Award, Ben Olsen explained, “It’s been great to work with DC Vote, and I’m all for equality for D.C. It’s a great time to be part of the District. It’s been my home for a long time, I’m raising a family here, and I’m proud of D.C. United’s commitment to staying here. District statehood and budget autonomy make so much sense, and this event helps bring these issues to the forefront.”
