One of the oldest surviving gondolas from Venice is now on view on the mezzanine of the East Building at the National Gallery of Art.
Complementing the exhibition Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals, the gondola, on loan from The Mariners’ Museum, dates from the mid-19th century and was once owned by American painter Thomas Moran. (While in Venice, Moran and his wife – typical tourists – hired a personal gondolier, and subsequently purchased his boat and brought it back to the United States.)
Check it out, now through May 30, 2011.
