Movie Monday: Mr. Holmes

Currently in theatres is a worthwhile film starring Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings and X-Men movies) and Laura Linney that fans of Sherlock Holmes will want to see.

It’s 1947, and an aging Sherlock Holmes faces the end of his days with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger (Milo Parker).  Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love — before it’s too late.

This is not another superhero Sherlock Holmes — maybe like the Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr. movies of the past.  Instead, McKellen portrays Sherlock in a much more human and relatable fashion.  Adapted from the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind written in 2005 by Mitch Cullins, this portrayal of Sherlock Holmes focuses on contrasting a non-fiction version of the sleuth with one of Dr. Watson’s fictional ones.

Mr. Holmes released in theatres July 17th.
