Movie Review Monday: This Means War

Two CIA spies in Los Angeles were best friends — that is, until they both begin dating the same girl (Reese Witherspoon)!  Then, it’s a competitive battle between the two (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy), using all of their spy skills to take down the enemy.

In This Means War, former Charlie’s Angels director McG returns to his potentially exciting “espionage” roots.  The story, however, was remarkably predictable, carrying a simplistic story line and little depth behind the marquee’s beautiful faces. (And can someone explain the Russian villain — and why he needs to be stopped?)

Despite the plot dependability, This Means War will leave you laughing. Bro-com between Pine and Hardy was funny and quick, especially in the first half.  And while Reese Witherspoon is a seemingly odd choice as leading lady in this type of rom-com, she holds her own. Look out also for Chelsea Handler, who plays Witherspoon’s best friend.  She’ll get your loudest laughs!

It’s tough not to have fun watching Hardy and Pine duke it out and whether it’s the gratuitous explosions McG throws in for his male audience or the situational comedy best loved by the females, This Means War makes for a great date flick.

You won’t be overly impressed with any one aspect of the film, but all together, McG delivers a movie that both the girl and the guy will enjoy.

This Means War opens in theaters Valentine’s Day.
