Reunion tour — or farewell performance?! Either way, Monty Python fans far and wide came together to relive some of the greatest moments in comedy history.
Sunday, for the first time in over three decades, Monty Python comedy legends John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin reunited on stage at London’s O2 Arena — and in movie theaters around the world (including 9 in the DC area!)– apparently to bid farewell to Monty Python on the curtain call of their final reunion show.
Presented by Fathom Events and Picturehouse Entertainment, “Monty Python Live (mostly)” was broadcast live to cinemas on Sunday, July 20 at 2:30 pm, with audience demand requiring additional showings on Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24 at 7:30 pm (local time).
“What could be finer at the end of a long life in comedy, than a chance to reunite with old pals and say goodbye to all our fans in one final mad musical show,” said Eric Idle in a pre-released statement. “We are very excited that not only do we get the chance to screw up on stage, we get a chance to screw up live in cinemas too.”
The Flying Circusers, who later became the face of British comedy, had not performed together in more than 30 years. Tickets for the first reunion performance sold out in a record 43.5 seconds, with the immediately added two additional dates selling out soon after, especially as the event was billed as likely the only — and last — chance to see the group perform together (and LIVE!).
The event featured some of the troupe’s best known bits done with modern twists. And while men were even joined during the evening’s shenanigans by some other famous surprise guests, it was perhaps the moments when they lost their lines, or couldn’t help but crack a smile (or stifle a laugh themselves) that were the most hilarious.
