MLK Opens, DC Dreams Deferred

Conception to ribbon cutting, it took some 15 years to complete, but the day is finally here.  Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial opens to the public, with related events continuing all week.

Tuesday was originally a day set aside for D.C. residents to enjoy the monument (named “D.C. Resident’s Day, in fact).  But don’t start thinking we’re special!  Surrounding states started asking us to share our sneak peek – so it’s been opened to the general public.
“The district doesn’t even have the authority to limit who would be able to go to the memorial on that day,” DC spokeswoman Millicent West said in an interview with WAMU.
Ah, DC… we’ll keep dreaming.
