“When she was first diagnosed and starting treatment, the childhood specialists at the hospital told us about Make-A-Wish and our first response was ‘Oh No! Our daughter is going to survive. We won’t need a Wish,'” reminisced the mother of Kelsey, a kidney cancer survivor who was the special guest of honor as Charity Chicks hosted a benefit for Make-A-Wish Mid Atlantic at Alex & Ani in Georgetown Thursday night.
Diagnosed with an exceptionally rare form of kidney cancer when she was just 19 months old, Kelsey has beaten the odds. And as a result, she got to do something few kids do… outside of their wildest imaginations.
“We can go anywhere you want to go… and she picked [the restaurant] at the front of our neighborhood,” laughed her Mother. But after a quick search on the internet for ideas, they were off to Beaches in Negril to play with Elmo in the sand!
Her absolute favorite part of the family vacation? The water slide. Her Mother’s? Knowing that it’s not only children who are terminally ill, but also those who suffer — and survive — life threatening illness that can make a wish… and have it granted.
Attendees took inspiration from Kelsey and energy from Alex and Ani’s line of fun bangles and bracelets. A percentage of the evening’s sales directly supported Make-a-Wish Mid-Atlantic.
