Late last month, Dock 5 at Union Market afforded DCers a few moments to jump in the proverbial time machine and do Prom Night all over again. And this time, do it right. This night was KIPPROM, the first (and hopefully annual) grown-up prom night fundraiser for KIPP DC.
KIPPROM raises funds to support the network of high-performing college preparatory charter schools that make up the DC network of KIPP. These schools are tuition-free and serve students in the city’s most underserved communities.
With the venue decorated impeccably and not feeling the slightest bit kitsch, the night started with a VIP dinner, as guests were wined and dined at a distinctly huuuuge step up from the high school cafeteria.
Adults enjoyed the open bar, and after mains were finished, the dance floor opened up — albeit to a slow start. (Ok, some things are just like high school! Age might have made some less awkward, but a few glasses of wine or a cleverly crafted signature KIPPROM cocktail can always serve as inspiration.) Once the DJ brought out the hits, the dance floor started to heat up as more and more guests started to cut loose. Lubricated adults owned their awkward moves and proudly strutted their stuff.
Relief from the dance floor also came in the form of a dessert lounge, where a delightful selection awaited the party goers on a veritable dessert table conveyor belt!
KIPPROM also gave everyone a second chance to vote for those whom they wanted to be Prom King and Queen.
All in all, KIPPROM is a great way to trip down memory lane, whilst doing some important fundraising work for KIPP DC, and the chance to relive, or reinvent everyone’s Prom night.
