DC has its fair share of restaurant debuts, but last week’s Joe’s (Seafood, Prime Steak and) Stone Crab was had some serious power in its first night pinchers. Apart from the virtually unlimited stone crab and prime rib, there was a prime social crowd — among those spotted were Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, Senator Dick Durbin, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, and lobbyist Heather Podesta.
The open bar open house was a Washington welcome to the Lettuce Entertain You concept now open at 15th and H Streets NW in the former Union Trust Bank Building that included a great and gluttonous feast of stone crab, steak, oysters, ceviche, famous cole slaw and too many passed desserts to try… though room was certainly saved for that famous key lime pie.
Two elaborately decorated stories — as decadent as the edibles — showcased the new massive corner restaurant. And even in the most obscure of private dining rooms, opening party guests filled the space with festivity — and food.
The night’s best in show was a three way tie between 1) the jumbo king crab offering, 2) Heather Darázs uber trendy crop top/slit skirt outfit combo, and 3) the Joe’s staffer who showed up with lemons and a wash tray to remove the vestige odor of stone crab so the soiree could continue… unsoiled and unsmelled.
Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab is now open year round (though those famous stone crabs are seasonal, October – May) at 15th and H Streets NW.
