Inside the Alice Awards Luncheon with Laura Bush

“When women’s rights are not respected, the rights of men are abused as well,” said former First Lady Laura Bush from the podium of the Sewell-Belmont House as she accepted the Alice Award Wednesday afternoon.

Named for the famous suffragette Alice Paul, the award is given annually to a distinguished woman recognized for making an outstanding contribution in “breaking barriers and setting new precedents for women.” Mrs. Bush’s selection was largely attributed to her “commitment to education, health care and human rights… both at home and abroad.”

She touched on all of those topics while speaking to the largest crowd in the history of the Award fundraiser, including notable guests Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, former ambassador Lindy Boggs and daughter Cokie Roberts, Abby Blunt, Anita McBride, Lea Berman, Catherine Reynolds, Debbie Dingell, Rick Goings, Buffy Cafritz, and Heather Podesta, but summed it up with the words directed at the audience from Burmese Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, whom she had met earlier that morning:

“It’s so important for all of us, as women, to support each other.”
