Horton’s Kids 5th Annual ‘Home Run’

Wednesday night, Nationals’ Stadium was packed! No, not with the normal baseball devotees, but with wide-eyed, animated children enjoying the 5th Annual Home Run for Horton’s Kids, a philanthropic hortonsevent to help support the underprivileged youth of Washington Dc’s Ward 8.

Several members of Congress, special guest CNN’s Jake Tapper, notable DC residents, and those hundreds of kids enjoyed a night filled with batting cages — and on the actual mound! — face-painting, a silent auction with over 40 items, and a sprawling buffet of mac and cheese, fries, coleslaw, hot dogs, burgers, and enough dessert to make each child’s sugar high a little too high… all of which was cooked by Celebrity Chef Spike Mendelsohn.hortons2

Almost all of the best parts of going to a baseball game were included in the evening: Cracker Jack, the spirited National’s Mascot (Screech), and the infamous sing along, “Take me out to the Ball Game…” in addition to the big “Home Run.”  Because not only did attendees get the experience of a lifetime, but they left knowing that they helped a child in need.

CORRECTION 5/17: Chef Spike Mendelsohn did not cook food at the event, as was reported.  Instead, the celeb Chef created the event’s signature drink and led Horton’s Kids in singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
