Harvey Feirstein battles True Love vs. Tradition at National Theatre

In our ever-changing world of entertainment, the draw to the theater is as shaky as the old word traditions in the beloved classic, The Fiddler on the Roof.  But mix in the mighty personality of four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, and that Fiddler sure betters his balance!

Now at National Theatre, Harvey Fierstein reprises the role of Tevye the Dairyman, which he played in the record-breaking Broadway revival of the musical.  He lends his distinct voice and unmistakable personal character to this traditional theater staple and changes Tevye’s role from “everyman” to.. the showstopper, the scenestealer, and the pillar of the community whose over-the-top presence allows audiences to contemplate a tinkering with tradition.

What is Fiddler’s tradition?  Father knows best (even when he may not), a girl’s only hope for social status is a well matched marriage, and success means sticking to your own – especially when it comes to religion.

Yet the reason this musical is so magnetizing may be that it is the timeless (nay, traditional!)  tale of aspiration, youth in revolt, and culture clash – as told by a laughable, loudmouthed, and truly loveable lead.

And as Fiddler shows us, tradition can’t trump true love!
