Finning Isn’t Funny

Standing in front of the feeding tanks, it’s easy to see why Shark Week is captivating.  Those animals are so mysterious, so stealthy, so threatening.

They are also threatened.

So this weekend, as viewers settled in to TV hours of fin fascination, the nation’s oldest aquarium, in conjunction with cartoonist Jim Toomey, opened it’s 11th Shark Weekend with the introduction of the new Sherman’s Lagoon at the National Aquarium.

Lovable Sherman gets guests up close and personal with practices like shark finning, over-fishing and the importance of establishing marine protected areas – as well as other cool shark stuff.  A visit to the interactive space (based on the popular nationally syndicated cartoon series) then leads to a viewing of the permanent exhibit of 70 tanks filled with over 200 species of “America’s Aquatic Treasures.”

Look into the Lagoon.  Sherman says he’s “dead sexy.”  He’s also available all summer…
