FELA!’s Action is in the Afrobeat

The unseasonably warm weather that’s settled over DC can only be due to one thing… the return of the fiery Broadway hit “FELA!” to The Shakespeare Theater’s Sidney Harman Hall.
FELA2“FELA!” is a truly unique experience which transforms the theater into a nightclub for legendary musician and political activist Fela Kuti’s final performance. “FELA!” doesn’t just encourage audience participation — It demands it. And the energy stirred up by both the music and the cast is so catchy, it’s impossible to say no!
Adesola Osakalumi (left) — who boasts credits in “Across the Universe” and “Idlewild,” among others — brings Fela Kuti to life on the stage, showing that the musician’s journey was not just musical or political, but a spiritual combination of both.
Former Destiny’s Child darling Michelle Williams (right) dazzles in the role of SandraFelaMICHELLE Isadore, Fela’s lover and teacher. But, she’s not the only big name attached to the musical — Jay-Z, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Questlove are all producers of the spectacular.
The passion of Fela’s life shines through in the powerful performances of every member of the cast and musical ensemble, and the political fight is brought into the audience’s reality with names like Trayvon Martin and Sean Bell prominently displayed on the stage.
Though this is FELA!’s second appearance at the STC, tickets of this run through February 10th are moving fast — and so will your hips as you dance to the Afrobeat.
