What do the Daiquiri, Margarita, Jack Rose, Whiskey Sour, Sidecar, Cosmopolitan and others all have in common?  They’re all pretty much the same drink.  How’s that?  Indeed, they’re all “sour” cocktails, all built on a delicious and versatile three-part platform of something strong, something sweet, and something sour.  For example, take the Daiquiri: rum is the strong, sugar is the sweet, and lime is the sour.  Swap out brandy for the rum, triple sec for the sweet, and lemon for the sour, et voilà, you now have a Sidecar.  The Aviation has gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice.  The Pisco Sour has pisco, sugar, egg white, bitters and lemon juice.  And so on and so on.  And once you master the basics of this amazingly versatile format, you can make many of the classics, and also try your hand at inventing new drinks of your own.  Join cocktail author and historian Philip Greene for an evening of cocktails, instruction, folklore, anecdotes and excerpts, learn the evolution of the sour (dating back to the British Royal Navy and its celebrated “grog”), the immortal (and communal) drink known as punch, New Orleans’ Brandy Crusta, the great Tiki movement of the 1930s – 1970s (and reborn today), to other great drinks and stories.  Guests will receive four sample-sized cocktails, plus light appetizers.
