On Thursday, September 12, 2013, community leader and owner of Taste Gastro Pub Vic Seested III, President & CEO of Hearts & Homes for Youth Rex Smith and Michael Andrews Bespoke, along with fellow host committee members actor Matthew Modine, former Washington Redskin Clinton Portis and Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Bethesda Magazine Steve Hull, will host the inaugural Men’s Event fundraiser for the Hearts & Homes for Youth (HHY) regional non-profit organization at Taste Gastro Pub in Olney, MD. The evening will also feature an exclusive beer tasting by Oskar Blues of Dale’s Pale Ale fame.
Avis Birely, Vic Seested III’s grandmother was a devoted advocate, giving selflessly of her thought, time and energy to the establishment of Hearts and Homes for Youth during its embryonic development in 1964 and through the rest of her life. Founders, Rex and Helen Smith found strength to carry on the crusade, so often frustrating, but with Avis on their shoulder, they persevered. It was Avis, as president of the Montgomery County Council, who, at a time when it appeared that all might be lost, shepherded the very first County grant to a non-profit agency; a grant of 25 thousand dollars that was matched by the president of Rockville Crushed Stone, he so impressed with her efforts and tenacity. That was the kick start which 50 years later now, sees 175 kids daily in caring homes and programs with opportunities to realize their dreams otherwise denied by life’s circumstances. Avis Birely – an Icon in the long and rich history of HHY and the Community for which she too was the most grand of a public servant.
The Hearts & Homes for Youth organization is supported by a virtual host of individual, community and corporate leaders and select individuals elected to the U.S. Congress, State Legislature and County and Local governments.
