“Boy if there were ever two women chopping weeds out of the wilderness, it is these two women,” Ann McDaniel, Managing Director of Newsweek, said of Helen Thomas and Eleanor Clift (at right) at the annual Helen Thomas Award Dinner of the American News Women’s Club last week held at the National Press Club.
Honoring Clift as a “role model for all… in journalism who seek the truth,” emcee Candy Crowley (State of the Union) led a lighthearted roast and toast of the author, Newsweek contributing editor and regular panelist on The McLaughlin Group who has served as role model and reviewer of the power and influence of women in politics.
“When we talk to young women today… we tell them you can do it all – but it’s hard,” said Clift after her illustrious career was detailed by a line up of newsy notables. “You really have to want to do it [journalism], because it’s not that easy,” added Crowley. “Journalism is going through changes, but it’s always going to be journalism. All that is changing is the platform.”
