DC Beer Week Opens with Annual Hop Chef Competition

How much Hennepin can YOU handle?!

As a sort of opening ceremony to DC Beer Week, Washington City Paper hosted Ommegang’s annual Hop Chef competition at Long View Gallery Sunday night, pitting eight of the DC area’s top chefs against one another in a brew battle.

Returning Champion, Clyde’s Chef Jeff Eng and his Signature Hair Flair

For ultimate bragging rights, the competitors, including Smith Commons’ Kamal Chanaka, DC3/Matchbox’s Anthony Piscioneri, Smoke & Barrel’s Logan McGear, Andrew Markerts of Beuchert’s, Thomas Schoborg of P.J. Clarke’s and Mad Fox Brewing’s Andrew Dixon, faced off in a supper and suds pairing contest judged on taste, looks, creativity — and, of course, the all important use of the Ommegang beer portfolio.

Artley’s winning lamb belly pairing

In the end, returning champ Clyde’s Tower Oaks Lodge Rockville Chef Jeff Eng took both runner-up and People’s Choice by wowing the crowd with his combination Pork Belly in Hennepin Quail Egg and Spicy Lobster Roll duo, while Pizzeria Orso Chef Will Artley nabbed the Judge’s top vote with his Fermented Pretzel Roll with Braised Lamb Belly creation.
