Corcoran Graduation 2009

Yes, it’s more than just an art museum. The Corcoran is also a well-known College of Art and Design. You may recall that probably one of the most famous graduates of the Corcoran, Tim Gunn (of late of Project Runway fame) graduated from this institution… with a degree in sculpture.

2009 graduates of the College were honored to have Gunn speak at their graduation ceremony Saturday afternoon at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall. Gunn was on hand to receive an honorary Doctorate from the College, but surprised many while speaking when he announced that this – 2009 – was the first Corcoran gradation that he had attended. He chose to skip his own. (Find out more by watching portions of his speech in the K Street Kate video above.)

Other famous Corcoran students who missed their graduations? “New Yorker” cartoonist George Booth didn’t make his…but that’s because he only attended, and did not actually graduate from the College.

The graduation ceremony was also an opportunity to showcase the All-Senior thesis exhibition -and for everyone to agonize over whether their graduation get-up was Gunn-worthy.
