Common misconception fueled in the USA: Cinco de Mayo is translated the “5th of May” as everyone knows which commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862; However, 16th of Sept. (1810) is FAR MORE significant in Mexico as it celebrates the begining of the Mexican war against Spanish colonial rule which ended with the Treaty of CĂłrdoba (1821), which recognized Mexican independence under the terms of the Plan of Iguala, ending three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. I’ve been in Mexico many times including weddings and specifically on 9-16-2006 where the fireworks and parties never stopped until dawn. DSCinWDC@gmail.com
