An NBA Bowling Birthday

Most birthdays you sit around a dinner table with friends and family, have a good time, and go home, explains Laron Profit.  But for his thirty-third birthday, the former Washington Wizard decided to do something a little different.  Instead of dinner, a guest roster that included NBA players Etan Thomas (with Profit at left) and Baron Davis chowed down on barbeque chicken pizza and mozzarella sticks while trying to bowl the perfect ten at Lucky Strike in Chinatown last Saturday night.  And instead of receiving presents, Profit dolled them out— in the form of raffle prizes like iPads and laptops.
The explanation?  Bowling for Haiti—Profit’s brainchild charity event to benefit the Center of Hope for Haiti, a non-profit that provides shelter, education, healthcare and other resources to Haitian residents.  Guests paid up to $35 to bowl side-by-side basketball pros and friends.
Profit explains that it wasn’t about the money, though.  People forget what’s going on when it’s not in the news, he explains.  “More than money, I wanted to raise awareness.”
No gutter balls.  Just good work and a good time.
