A Nod to the Women of the Civil Rights Movement Kicked Off This Film Festival

March On Washington Film Festival’s Inaugural Awards Gala took place Monday evening (September 23rd) at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

The 2019 Festival, which runs through September 29th, is paying special honor this year to the women of the Civil Rights Movement and their achievements in sports, politics, business, entertainment, advocacy and scholarship.

The flagship festival kicked off by honoring American poet Nikki Giovanni with a Lifetime Legacy Award and Peggy Wallace KennedyRep. Terri Sewell, and Dr. Joyce Ladner with March On Awards.

Among the notables in attendance at the Inaugural Awards Gala were Congressman John LewisSenator Doug JonesHonorable Eric H. Holder Jr.Dr. Sharon Malone, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton enjoying performances from Terri Lyne Carrington and the Social Science Band with guest vocalist Lizz Wright.
