A Local Taste on Tradition: July is National Rickey Month!

It’s mid-month and we’re worried that you haven’t been tipping back enough of July’s trademark cocktail — and the official drink of the District – The Rickey!

To make your own Rickey is rickey-diculously simple.  In a medium glass, add a base spirit, carbonated water and lime juice.  Cheers!  But… what’s the best way to celebrate Rickey Month in the hometown of Rickey renown?  We’ve got two local takes on the tradition that’ll keep you sipping all summer, plus a Rickey recipe you can make on your own!

Stop by Bourbon Steak to order Duane Sylvestre’s Neve Joelle, a refreshing summery spin on the traditional Gin Rickey which includes strawberry and bay leaf soda fizz.  Then, to make it especially seasonal, Duane adds Cointreau — a great summer alternative to the standard gin or vodka — for an 80-proof strength that sips with just the right amount of sweetness.

Or breeze by Brasserie Beck for a delectable version of the Rickey, the Trickey Rick, created by bar manager, Alex Quayle. This sip stunner features housemade vanilla-jalapeño syrup for an unexpectedly creative kick!

Many of the city’s best eateries feature a take on the traditional Rickey refreshment.  Share your favorite local Rickey sip… or try making your own mix using the base Rickey recipe below:
